Kerala Local Body Election Results 2025: The Congress-led United Democratic Front received a significant political boost Saturday as trends from Kerala’s local body elections pointed to a comfortable win for the opposition alliance, less than a year before the 2026 Assembly polls. The Left Democratic Front’s final push to consolidate support through a raft of welfare initiatives appeared to have little impact on voter sentiment.
Initial counting figures and declared results from the two-phase Kerala local body elections held earlier this week suggested a clear swing in favour of the UDF.
For the first time, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA registered a victory in the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation, where the incumbent CPI(M)-led LDF has ruled for the last 45 years.
The outcome of the polls showed the NDA winning 50 seats out of the Thiruvananthapuram civic body’s 101 wards as against the ruling LDF’s 29 and the principal Opposition UDF’s 19, with two seats going to Independents. The election in one seat was cancelled after the death of a candidate last week.
Meanwhile, political leaders also reacted to the developments.
Taking to X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote, “Thank you Thiruvananthapuram! The mandate the BJP-NDA got in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation is a watershed moment in Kerala’s politics. The people are certain that the development aspirations of the state can only be addressed by our Party. Our Party will work towards this vibrant city’s growth and boost ‘Ease of Living’ for the people.”
He added, “My gratitude to all hardworking BJP Karyakartas who have worked among the people, which has ensured a spectacular result in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. Today is a day to recall the work and struggles of generations of Karyakartas in Kerala, who worked at the grassroots, which ensured today’s result became a reality. Our Karyakartas are our strength and we are proud of them!”
Thank you Thiruvananthapuram!

In a third tweet, the Prime Minister said, “My gratitude to the people across Kerala who voted for BJP and NDA candidates in the local body polls in the state. Kerala is fed up of UDF and LDF. They see NDA as the only option that can deliver on good governance and build a #VikasitaKeralam with opportunities for all.”

Kerala BJP President Rajeev Chandrashekhar said, “It is a historical victory, for every BJP worker across the state because we have made significant strides in out vote share and political footprint. BJP and NDA have made gains in the hard core areas of LDF and UDF.”

He added, “This has established that the LDF is out of the picture… The option in the coming Assembly elections is between UDF and NDA. We always attacked LDF for their corruption and mal-governance, while Congress is in alliance with the CPI(M) in 27 states and 8 Union Territories, so it should not mislead the people… We do not want any endorsement from corrupt twins like the Congress and the Left… I am very proud to be a part of this party (BJP).”
Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, who is also the Thiruvananthapuram Member of Parliament (MP), said, “A huge congratulations to @UDFKerala for a truly impressive win across various local bodies! This is a massive endorsement and a powerful signal ahead of the state legislative elections. Hard work, a strong message and anti-incumbency have all clearly paid off to achieve a much better result than in 2020.”
He also congratulated the BJP for its victory in Thiruvananthapuram. “I also want to acknowledge the historic performance of the BJP in Thiruvananthapuram, and offer humble congratulations on their significant victory in the city Corporation — a strong showing that marks a notable shift in the capital’s political landscape. I campaigned for a change from 45 years of LDF misrule, but the voters have ultimately rewarded another party that also sought a clear change in governance,” Tharoor wrote.
What a day of amazing results in the Kerala local self-government elections! The mandate is clear, and the democratic spirit of the state shines through.

Tharoor further said, “That is the beauty of democracy. The people’s verdict must be respected, whether for the UDF overall or for the BJP in my constituency. We will continue to work for the betterment of Kerala, advocating for the people’s needs and upholding the principles of good governance. Onwards and upwards!”
Speaking to the media, senior Congress leader MM Hassan said, “This is the indication of the people’s feelings against the state and central governments… This shows that Pinarayi government is totally against the people. We are confident that in the upcoming Assembly elections, the result will improve and we will come back to power. BJP and LDF have a secret understanding, otherwise they could not have had this result.”
