Currently, about 1,083 km of metro rail network, including RRTS corridors is operational across 25 cities in the country. In a statement, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) said that metro rail projects are capital-intensive and require extensive appraisal under the Metro Rail Policy, 2017.
The approval of such projects depends on the feasibility of the proposals and the availability of resources, and therefore no specific timeline can be fixed for their sanction, it added.
Metro rail projects in South India
At present, 251.36 km of new metro rail lines are under construction across four southern states – Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on December 11. The Union Minister also stated that a total of 247.68 km of metro rail network is currently operational across these states.
