A Class 9 student of a government high school in Odisha’s Kendrapara district was detained Friday after he was found carrying a locally made pistol to the classroom, triggering panic.
The incident occurred at Korua government high school under Kudanagari police limits in Kendrapara district.
Police said a case has been registered under the Arms Act on a complaint from the school headmaster. The pistol has been sent for forensic analysis to a Bhubaneswar laboratory, and police are probing how the schoolboy obtained the weapon.
“The boy has been kept at a correctional home as he is a juvenile. He is being questioned to find out how the student came into possession of the firearm. But the firearm was not loaded. We have been questioning him but he has been changing his statements,” Inspector Arabinda Sarana Mohanty, who is probing the case, told The Indian Express.
According to school authorities, classmates grew suspicious after noticing the boy was distracted and alerted a teacher.
“Suspecting something unusual, the teacher frisked the student and found a heavy firearm concealed at his waist. That set off panic for some time and led us to inform authorities,” headmaster Nrusingha Chandra Mallik told The Indian Express, adding that the child was “unruly” and that his parents had been informed of the development.
