Hours after Modi denies US role in India-Pak ceasefire, Trump repeats claim: ‘I stopped the war’

India Pakistan trade: Referring to both Pakistan’s army chief Asim Munir and PM Narendra Modi as being “extremely influential” in halting the conflict, Trump said he had used trade diplomacy to get both sides to de-escalate. “They are both nuclear countries. I got it stopped.”

India Pakistan ceasefire 2025: Sticking to his version of events despite India’s denial, US President Donald Trump again claimed that he “stopped the war” between India and Pakistan, hours after a 35-minute phone call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

PM Modi and Trump spoke on Wednesday after the US President had to leave the G7 Summit in Canada early, cutting short a planned in-person meeting. According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, the Prime Minister told Trump that Pakistan had requested the ceasefire and that India’s military response, Operation Sindoor, had been “measured and non-escalatory,” targeting only terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

Misri made it clear that there was “no proposal” for US mediation and “no mention” of any India-US trade deal during the conversation.

“The discussion to cease military action took place directly between India and Pakistan through the existing channels of communication between the two armed forces, and it was initiated at Pakistan’s request,” Misri said. “Prime Minister Modi firmly stated that India does not and will never accept mediation. There is complete political consensus in India on this matter.”

But Trump, speaking to reporters later in the day ahead of his lunch meeting with Pakistan’s army chief Asim Munir at the White House, doubled down on his claim. “Well, I stopped the war between Pakistan—I love Pakistan—I think Modi is a fantastic man… And I stopped the war between Pakistan and India,” he said.

Referring to both Munir and Modi as being “extremely influential” in halting the conflict, Trump said he had used trade diplomacy to get both sides to de-escalate. “They are both nuclear countries. I got it stopped.”

He also expressed frustration that his alleged role wasn’t recognised: “I don’t think I had one story written, did I have one story written? I stopped a war between two major nations, major nuclear nations. I did not have a story written about it, but that’s okay. You know why? The people know.”

India, however, has reiterated that the ceasefire talks were initiated directly by Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations, who reached out to his Indian counterpart on May 10.
