A Somali police officer says a car bomb has exploded outside a restaurant in the Somali capital near the presidential palace.

Police officer Mohamed Abdi said he had no information on casualties from the explosion Tuesday in Mogadishu.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but it bore the hallmarks of the Somali armed group al-Shabab, which routinely carries out attacks in Mogadishu and elsewhere in Somalia.

At least seven people were killed Monday when an al-Shabab bomb exploded in a UN van in the northern region of Puntland.
