US President Joe Biden has strongly condemned efforts to downplay the January 6 Capitol attack, stressing that “we should not forget” the violent attempt to block the certification of the 2020 election results, AP reported.
In an opinion piece for The Washington Post, Biden reflected on the events of January 6, 2021, calling the actions of the mob “violent insurrectionists” who attacked the Capitol.
Biden wrote, “We should be proud that our democracy withstood this assault,” and added, “And we should be glad we will not see such a shameful attack again this year.”
He noted that the upcoming certification of Donald Trump’s election victory would proceed peacefully without the violence seen in 2021, highlighting the contrast between that chaotic day and the orderly transition planned for this year.
Biden emphasized that the peaceful transfer of power was a proud American tradition. “After what we all witnessed on January. 6, 2021, we know we can never again take it for granted,” he stated in the piece, also expressing concern over efforts to “rewrite — even erase — the history of that day.”
Although Biden did not mention Trump directly in the article, he criticized the ongoing attempts to deny the events of the Capitol attack, saying, “We cannot allow the truth to be lost.”
He reiterated that the upcoming transition will be smooth, with an invitation extended to the incoming president for the White House on January 20, despite Trump having skipped Biden’s inauguration in 2021.
In a recent statement to reporters, Biden warned that the events of January 6 should not be forgotten. “We’ve got to get back to basic, normal transfer of power,” he said, while also stressing that his administration would ensure a peaceful handover of power.
When asked if he still considered Trump a threat to democracy, Biden replied, “What he did was a genuine threat to democracy. I’m hopeful we’re beyond that now.”
