Bangladesh student leader shot: A student leader of Bangladesh’s National Citizen Party (NCP), Motaleb Sikder, was shot at by miscreants and injured in Khulna on Monday, days after the country was thrown into violent protests over the death of a young leader Sharif Osman Hadi. Sikder, who is known as one of the key members of the NCP, was shot at in his head near his house in Khulna city.

The development comes as protests erupted across Bangladesh after the killing of Hadi, who was a key figure in student-led protests in the country last year that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power. Hasina fled to New Delhi amid massive protests. Hadi died in a hospital in Singapore last week after being shot on December 12 in Dhaka.

Following the death of Hadi, protests spiralled in Bangladesh and several buildings were set ablaze and vandalised by crowds, including those of leading media houses Prothom Alo and The Daily Star. The shooting took place in the port city of Chattogram during a rally of the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) which was attended by hundreds.
