Heavy rain and hail caused a surprise snowfall in Saudi Arabia’s Al-Jawf region, turning the area into an icy landscape for the first time. In sharp contrast to the region’s typical desert landscape, the normally parched mountains were covered in snow after the rain that began last Wednesday and evolved into hailstorms.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, this unusual weather event has not only changed the topography but also given rivers and waterfalls new life, causing valleys to fill up and streams to resume their flow. People have been posting videos and pictures of the snow-covered desert on social media which have captured the attention of viewers all across the world.

The UAE’s recent strange weather phenomenon can be chalked up to an unusual low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea, according to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM). This system swept in moisture-rich air that, after it met the intense desert warmth, sparked thunderstorms, hail, and even, surprisingly, snow.

After social media exploded with photos and videos of the phenomenon, everyone started talking about climate change and put forward their views in the comments section.

One user wrote, “Not a good sign, mother nature is changing its colours.” Another user pointed out, “It’s not snow, it’s hail. Big difference.”

A third user posted a sarcastic comment and said, “Nah, despite what happened, climate change is just another scam.”

Saudi Arabia’s weather agency is now warning citizens to prepare for more severe weather in the days ahead after the unexpected snowfall. Strong gusts, hail, and thunderstorms are predicted, which might interfere with visibility and cause travel delays.
