Dube has the last say. South Africa are all out for their lowest ever T20I total. Well India show just how dangerous they are in this format. South Africa were on top for much of the Indian innings but they gave the hosts a sliver of a chance in the form of that innings from Hardik Pandya. India managed to get their noses in front because of that knock, and then they just barnstormed the rest of the match. It started off with Arshdeep Singh picking a couple of early wickets, Axar and Pandya both got wickets off their first balls of the match, Varun Chakravarthy then took a couple before Bumrah and Axar finished it off.

(AP Photo/Rafiq Maqbool)India vs South Africa 1st T20 : South Africa’s good start to the match ended up being a distant memory by the end of it as they were all out for just 74 runs, their lowest ever total in T20Is and lost to India by 101 runs in the series opener in Cuttack. Hardik Pandya almost single-handedly saved India the blushes with the bat by smashing an unbeaten 59 in 28 balls. It was then a team effort from the Indian bowlers as they dismantled the South Africans bit by bit.

Jasprit Bumrah picked his 100th T20I wicket in rather bizarre circumstances. The replay seemed to show that he had overstepped but the third umpire wasted no time in deciding that the delivery was a legitimate one. Dewald Brevis was the man who fell, he was pretty much South Africa’s last recognised batter. Bumrah then took yet another in the same over to leave South Africa down to their last two wickets. Axar Patel then struck the next over to reduce South Africa to their last wicket.

Pandya is back and he has single-handedly given India a realistic chance of giving South Africa a target close to 180. Pandya in the process smashed his way past 50 in just 25 balls in an innings where his teammates largely struggled to put bat to ball. Pandya seemed to have steadied the ship with fellow all-rounder Shivam Dube, until the latter was cleaned up by Donovan Ferreira while going for a wild slog. Shubman Gill’s comeback didn’t last too long as he fell off just the third ball of the match to Lungi Ngidi.

Axar's second ball in the 12th over is slower through the air, Nortje tries a cover drive. He misses and there go his stumps.
South Africa 72/9 in 11.2 overs
Banged in short down the leg Maharaj tries to pull and gloves it to Jitesh. SA down to their last two wickets.
South Africa 71/8 in 11 overs
But it is all a little bizarre at this point. Dewald Brevis late on the pull second ball of the 11th over, he is caught at extra cover by Suryakumar Yadav. That's all fair, Brevis walks off. The third umpire, though, announces that he is checking for no ball and would you believe it, the replays seem to indicate that Bumrah was overstepping marginally. But then, bizarrely, the third umpire just goes ahead and decides that it is a legitimate delivery. That replay was shown ever so briefly, it was almost like the third umpire just let it play put as a formality. Quite strange but that is 100 T20I wickets for Bumrah.
The South Africans are also not protesting in anyway, it has to be said.
South Africa 68/7 in 10.2 overs
Jansen had met the fourth ball of the 10th over with something of a short arm jab to send the ball over deep midwicket for a six. He tries to repeat that shot next ball but this time, it's a googly. He misses entirely and the ball takes the off bail. That should be the end of the South African challenge really.
Edged and gone! Second ball of the eighth pitched outside off, he gets some extra bounce. Ferreira tries to cut but misses it entirely, the ball takes the glove and Jitesh rises with the bounce to take a sharp, sharp catch.
Wow, he single-handedly saved India the blushes with the bat and now he dismisses arguably South Africa's biggest most dependable chance at this stage.
SA 45/4 in 6.1 overs
Well how about it! Axar follows up for the last over of the powerplay after Chakravarthy's over and he strikes with his very first ball. Length ball, stays low and skids right through Markram, who stayed back and sees his leg stump knocked over.
South Africa 40/3 in 5.1 overs
After Markram managed to get a four and a six off Bumrah in the previous over. It is Dewald Brevis who is giving him company and India would know just how perilous it would be to not continue chipping away. Regardless of the conditions, if there is one thing that South Africa have made pretty clear on this tour, it is that they never go away.
Markram on on 13 off 12, Brevis on one off one.
South Africa 28/2 in 4 overs
Big appeal for LBW turned down, SKY takes the review a little hesitantly. It was a good one to take as it turns out.
Almost T20I wicket No.100 for Jasprit Bumrah off the third ball of that over, it was a back of a length delivery that carried fine to deep third man. But it was brilliant work from Dube in that position. He leaped, took the catch, which wasn't a catch, his movement took him past the boundary so he threw the ball up in the air and caught it once back in. It meant that all the batters got was a single from that ball. And three more singles after that.
South Africa 10/1 in 2 overs
Second ball duck for De Kock! That is a beauty from Arshdeep, full and swerving away from QDK who tried to meet it with a drive. Gets a nice thick edge and gives Abhishek Sharma at second slip catching practice.
South Africa 0/1 in 0.2 overs
All right, Arshdeep Singh has the ball in his hands so Jasprit Bumrah won't be starting the attack. Quinton de Kock is opening with Aiden Markram at the other end. Star-studded contest out there for now.
Yet another expensive over helps India reach 175 after their 20 overs. It did not look like they would get there at one stage, but Hardik Pandya produced a superb, counter-attacking innings and stayed unbeaten on 59 off 29 balls to take the hosts to a score they would be content with.
India 175/6 after 20 overs.
50 for Pandya on return. He gets to the landmark with a sliced hit over Quinton de Kock's head that goes for six. Used Nortje's pace expertly there.
India 169/6 after 19.2 overs
Pandya continues to sizzle in Cuttack. Takes Simapla for 11 runs before Jitesh ends the over with another maximum.
India 163/6 after 19 overs.
Another rising stand ends as Ferreira removes Dube. India have recovered well after the early stutter thanks to Pandya, who will want to give one final flourish to this innings.
India 145/6 after 18 overs.
Ferreira strikes! It is a rapid delivery from the offie at 108 kph. Dube swings towards the leg side and misses it altogether and is bowled. The crowd is stunned into silence.
India 137/6 in 17.1 overs
On a surface where every batter has struggled, Hardik Pandya has looked pristine. He has made the most of the straight as well as the square boundaries and taken India into a comfortable position.
India 137/5 after 17 overs
Shivam Dube backs the 17-run over with another over of 10 runs as India inch closer to a defendable score. The pair have put on 27 runs in 12 balls.
India 131/5 after 16 overs.
Hardik Pandya slashes a pacy delivery from Nortje for four and he is then helped by another quick, rising ball that goes above Quinton de Kock. He ends the over with a four drilled past mid off. India needed that over to get some momentum into their innings.
India 121/5 after 15 overs.
Simapla removes Axar! The left-hander falls after striking a six, caught by Ferreira at point. India continue to slide. South Africa in the ascendency. The onus now on Pandya to take India to a score they can defend. This has been a mighty impressive performance from the visitors.
India 104/5 after 14 overs.
Hardik Pandya showed excellent six hitting ability in the SMAT and he brings it out against Maharaj, taking him for two sixes as India's innings gets going again.
India 96/4 after 13 overs.
India are in a hole and it is on Axar and Hardik Pandya to get them out of it. South Africa have been spot on with the ball from the start on a pitch, where strokeplay has not been easy.
India 80/4 after 12 overs.
Ngidi returns for a second spell and removes the well set Tilak Varma for 26. Again, a rising delivery from him and Tilak goes for the pull. He hits the bat behind square, straight into Marco Jansen's hands, who takes another well judged catch at deep fine leg.
India 78/4 in 11.4 overs.
Donovan Ferreira starts his outing with the ball on a tidy note. Just 5 runs in his first over as both left-handers are not allowed to get away easily.
India 76/3 after 11 overs.
Tilak Varma launches the ball over the square leg boundary and it bounces off the roof and goes out of the ground. It gets the crowd going too. A steady stand growing between him and Axar.
India 71/3 after 10 overs.
The fast bowling battery has been replaced by the spin of Keshav Maharaj, who concedes nine runs in his first over. Tilak Varma is off to a start with 16 runs off 22 balls and needs to bat as deep as he can in this innings, rallying the rest of the batters.
India 63/3 after 9 overs.
Anrich Nortje, who has not played a T20I since the World Cup final in 2024, starts as well as he could have, conceding a mere four runs in his first over.
India 54/3 after 8 overs.
A single from Tilak Varma off the last ball off Simapla's over takes India's score to 50. The onus on him and Axar Patel to rebuild this innings.
India 50/3 after 7 overs.
What a stunning catch. Abhishek Sharma falls to Lutho Sipamla. Dug in short, the left-hander goes for the pull and Jansen covers a lot of ground and takes a fine low catch on the deep fine boundary.
India 48/3 in 6.3 overs.
The Powerplay ends with Jansen conceding eights runs. India have their task cut out to reach a competitive score on a pitch that is very different to what they would have wanted.
India 40/2 after 6 overs.
Good start from Lutho Sipamla, backing the excellent work done by Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen. He mixed the lengths very well, not allowing either batters to free their arms.
India 32/2 after 5 overs.
Abhishek Sharma struck on the hip bone by a rising delivery from Marco Jansen. He backs that with a fine pull shot for six. This surface may not be as suited as he would like for fluent strokeplay, but India will want him to bat as many overs as possible.
India 26/2 after 4 overs
An outstanding start from South Africa on a surface that does not look suited for stroke making. Ngidi removes Suryakumar Yadav despite conceding 11 runs.
India 18/2 after 3 overs
Ngidi gets SKY! A four and a six from the batter is followed by a full ball and the Indian captain mistimes a flick, it takes the leading edge and he is caught at mid-on by Aiden Markram for 12.
India 17/2 in 2.4 overs
Marco Jansen backs up Lungi Ngidi with an excellent over. Just one run from it and the ball stopped on the batter a fair bit. Will be interesting to see what early target SKY has in his mind on this pitch.
India 7/1 after 2 overs.
India have been dented early as the retuning Shubman Gill falls for four to Lungi Ngidi. Suryakumar Yadav, in need of a big score, has walked in at 3.
India 6/1 after 1 over
Shubman Gill got off the mark with a boundary but fell the next ball, mistiming a charge off Lungi Ngidi. Good start for South Africa.
India 4/1 in 0.3 overs
The South African national anthem comes first, followed by India's. After the anthems are done, most of the South Africans stay back on the field and huddle up. Shubman Gill and Abhishek walk out in full gear a minute later to open the innings for India.
Deep Dasgupta and Pommie Mbangwa were at pitch side before the match began. This is what they said:
"62m and 65m square boundaries, 76m down the ground. This pitch was relaid in 2023. It's a red soil wicket but can't quite see the soil because there is grass on here. There are also a few cracks. It's going to play a lot better than it looks. Batters will make merry but I would bowl first. The red soil generally has more bounce. It's cold to the touch and dusty. Difficult to judge. Dew factor was massive yesterday, it usually sets in at 5:30pm but it hasn't yet. If you win the toss, you want to chase,"
Aiden Markram: We're going to bowl first. Expecting conditions to be good here in India. Quite a bit of dew around, might be a constant throughout the game but might get a bit worse later. (Quick turnaround time between formats) It's the way things work, lot of the games end up playing in the mind, need to get yourself in the right frame of mind. Fantastic build-up to the World Cup. From a conditions point of view, it's going to be great. You can’t simulate these, certainly not back in South Africa, so that’s a massive thing. And then obviously testing yourself against one of the better outfits in the world. Looking forward to that, seeing where we are. And we’ve got another couple of months after this to fine-tune things and hopefully be ready for that World Cup.
Suryakumar Yadav: That’s okay. I mean, we were a little confused looking at the wicket. Yesterday it was looking a little more greener, but today we were a little confused. But it’s okay, we’re happy to bat first. It gives a good challenge to put runs on the board and come out here and defend. I mean, see, it (dew factor) becomes a little challenging for the bowlers - you can’t run away from the fact. But going from here on, I think that’s going to remain for a really long time. It has been there for a very long time. So if we keep focusing on that, I think the main job will be in trouble in doing that. But yeah, let’s not think about it and have it as a challenge. We had a good series in Australia. Now we play five T20s against South Africa and then we play against New Zealand, so 15 good T20s. I think it’s good preparation. Same thing what we’ve been doing in the last few series: be fearless, enjoy the game, and be at it for the next three hours. It (selection) is a very good headache to have. But I’ll tell you the guys who are missing out: Sanju Samson, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana.
South Africa XI: Quinton de Kock(w), Aiden Markram(c), Tristan Stubbs, Dewald Brevis, David Miller, Donovan Ferreira, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Lutho Sipamla, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje
Aiden Markram says that South Africa will have four seamers and full time spinner in Keshav Maharaj, along with himself and Donovan Ferreira bowling part-time.
India XI: Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav(c), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Jitesh Sharma(w), Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakaravarthy, Arshdeep Singh
Suryakumar said that the guys missing out today are Sanju Samson, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana. And yet, and yet, this Indian lineup looks utterly impenetrable. A lot of players in very good form.
No, KL Rahul's toss win in that third ODI was only a false dawn after all. No luck for India with tosses across formats, Aiden Markram calls it right and he says that South Africa are bowling first.
Well the captains are out there, SKY and Aiden Markram, along with Ravi Shastri on the mic and match referee Richie Richardson. SKY is in that new jersey that was unveiled a few days back. Pretty neat.
This will be the fourth T20I to be played in Cuttack and South Africa have featured in two of the three in the past. They have won both matches. The first was a game marred by crowd trouble in 2015, and the second in 2022.
Since the start of 2024, India have won 25 of their 28 T20Is outright when Hardik Pandya has been in their side. Technically the number of wins goes up to 26 if one counts the Super Over victory over Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup this year. Now, it would be wrong to present the presence of Pandya in all these as simply a matter of luck. If anything, it is testimony to just crucial he is for balance in both batting and bowling. When he has not played in this same period, India have nine wins, two losses and two ties.
In the months since the heartbreaking defeat they suffered at India's hands in the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup, South Africa have gone and won the World Test Championship and justified it by establishing themselves as arguably the best Test team in the world. Their ODI prowess has also been on display in this period. In T20Is, though, it has been a differnt story. On the one hand, India have lost just four of the 30 T20Is they have played in this period. South Africa have won just nine and lost 16.
India don't play a Test series for a long, long time, and there is going to be a whole lot of T20 cricket in the meantime, including the IPL and then the T20 World Cup. And so it will be interesting to see what the real aftermath would be a result as disastrous as a whitewash at home against South Africa, who had only won two Test matches in India this entire century before that. Especially considering India remain an outright favourite to win the T20 World Cup. For South Africa, they are clearly doing a lot of things right. After their historic Test series win at the start of this tour, they pushed India to the brink in a 350-run chase in the first ODI and then equalled the record for the highest succesfull run chase ever in the format against the Indians in the second. They then lost the third ODI rather meekly though, which would be a cause for concern. But imagine if they somehow manage to get something out of this T20I series, a format in which India are right now looking almost unbeatable. That would have some very immediate repurcussions indeed in the Indian camp.
According to AccuWeather, temperatures during the match will range from 25°C in the morning to 28°C in the afternoon, before dropping to around 15° by evening. The conditions are expected to be hazy while the health quality will remain pretty unhealthy which is the case for most parts in India.
Or at least that is what Suryakumar Yadav indicated in the presser yesterday. Shivam Dube and Hardik Pandya are two of the most potent big-hitters in this Indian team, both of whom excel at batting in the latter stages of the game. All of these are qualities that Rinku Singh possesses and, some may say, is even better at doing than at least one of the other two. But, what Rinku doesn't have is the bowling skills that can allow the captain to give you four full overs. Dube and Pandya are both bona fide T20 fast bowlers, particularly the latter who can cat times be picked on either one of his skills alone. “Dube is an all-rounder. He and Hardik are the all-rounders. So, you can’t compare an all-rounder. The thing is all the batters from 3 to 7 are capable of batting at any position," said SKY.
the return of Shubman Gill to the squad has resulted in Samson being displaced from the opening slot and having to often adjust anywhere in the top order to the lower middle order, if he is picked. India captain Suryakumar Yadav acknowledged that Samson did extremely well at the top of the order but Gill was always first choice.
“In terms of Sanju, yes, when he came into the circuit, he batted higher up the order. Now, the thing is, other than the openers, I feel everyone has to be very flexible,” Suryakumar told reporters. Read more here.
India Squad: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Shubman Gill (vc)*, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Sanju Samson (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakaravarthy, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Washington Sundar.
South Africa Squad: Aiden Markram (c), Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi, Reeza Hendricks, David Miller, George Linde, Corbin Bosch, Marco Jansen, Quinton de Kock (wk), Donovan Ferreira (wk), Tristan Stubbs, Ottneil Baartman, Keshav Maharaj, Kwena Maphaka, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje.

Sanju Samson or Jitesh Sharma? This is the lingering question that India will look to find answers as they gear up for the final stretch of 10 T20Is ahead of the T20 World Cup beginning February 7. In what is otherwise a settled team, where anyone apart from the 15 picked for the series making the World Cup squad would come as a surprise, the only point of debate is around who among the two wicketkeepers would make the XI. It is a question that India would hope they find the answers soon and not leave it too far late, as depending on who gets the nod, the batting line-up would invariably go through a combination change.
Hello and welcome to The Indian Express' live coverage of the first T20I between India and South Africa. The first match of the series will be played at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Tuesday. After missing out on the second Test and three ODIs midway through the series due to a neck injury, T20I vice-captain Shubman Gill is fit and back in the mix and is expected to open alongside Abhishek Sharma.
Hardik Pandya will also be making his return post-injury. The T20I series will also witness the return of star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested for the One-Dayers.

Chaos, crowds, new core: India’s T20 rush toward T20 World Cup begins in Cuttack

Men in khaki and camouflage manning the highway that connects the 45-km stretch between Bhubaneswar to Cuttack highway; barricades placed at regular intervals; ropes put across all the gullies that connect the highway; a tight security cauldron all around the Barabati Stadium; people across age-groups patiently waiting outside their community gates just to have a look at the stars. You don’t need any promotion to tell an Odia that the Indian team is here.
When the off-line tickets were opened last week, there were chaotic scenes that resembled scenes from the 90s. Out of 40,000 capacity, word around is that only 10,000 were actually put on sale. At the black market, tickets are being sold at 3x rates, with the police already arresting a few.
