In a move to deepen the education and innovation ties between India and Australia, Western Sydney University (WSU) on Tuesday formalised an agreement with the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) to establish its first campus in India in Uttar Pradesh.

The signing ceremony was held at the ITC Maurya hotel in New Delhi, which saw participation from senior leaders of both countries.

GNIDA has leased 40,000 square feet for the proposed campus. The Noida authority has described the collaboration as a move that aligns with UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s aim of making the state a “global education and innovation hub.”

Awanish Awasthi, Advisor to the Chief Minister, framed the partnership as a vote of confidence in the state’s ambitions. “UP is growing rapidly in both education and infrastructure, and partnerships like this reflect the confidence that the world now places in our state’s development agenda,” he said at the event.

Australia’s Education Minister, Jason Clare, also emphasised the multilateral significance of the collaboration. “This partnership gloriously demonstrates the shared commitment between Australia and India to support young people in gaining the skills they need for a sustainable and globally competitive future,” he said, calling WSU’s Noida venture an “important milestone” in bilateral educational cooperation.

WSU, an institution known in Australia for its research in sustainability, water systems, and agricultural innovation, plans a phased rollout of academic offerings in India.

The first year will include programs in Business Analytics, Marketing, Data Science, Sustainable Water Futures, and Agriculture, followed in year two by MBAs in Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Supply Chain Management.

Alok Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary in charge of Infrastructure and Industrial Development, described the partnership as an attempt to bridge “the gap between the aspirations of our youth and the opportunities available to them within the state.”

Further, he added that he was confident that WSU’s presence would strengthen the region by “bringing global expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data sciences, and emerging fields.”

“Greater Noida emerged as the natural choice for our first campus in India because it aligns perfectly with Western Sydney University’s mission and growth ambitions,” WSU Vice Chancellor Professor George Williams said.

Citing the area’s planned infrastructure and “expanding innovation ecosystem,” Williams said the university aims to create “a campus that delivers world-class academic experiences, robust industry partnerships, and transformative opportunities for students across India and beyond.”
