From art galleries to big sporting events, it has become common for climate activists to disrupt them to send their message across. To protest against new oil and gas drilling, climate activists interrupted two Wimbledon matches on July 5 by throwing confetti and jigsaw puzzle pieces onto the courts.

The first-round match between Bulgarian tennis player Grigor Dimitrov and Japan’s Sho Shimabukuro was interrupted by two climate activists who threw “environmentally friendly” confetti and jigsaw puzzle pieces onto the court.

Wearing a T-shirt that said ‘Just Stop Oil’, a man is seen sitting on the court before being taken away. Then a man is seen interrupting another match between Britain’s Katie Boulter and Australia’s Daria Saville. As the man throws confetti on the court, the crowd is seen booing his actions. A collective moaning among the spectators is heard.

Instagram page Now This News posted the video Thursday. Just Stop Oil, an environmental activist group, is calling for the UK government to stop all new oil and gas drilling and has been putting on protests since early 2022.

“I’m just an ordinary grandmother in resistance to this government’s policy of serving us new oil and gas licenses,” Deborah Wilde, a retired teacher from London who took part in the disruption, is quoted as saying.

“In normal circumstances this sort of disruption would be entirely unacceptable, but these aren’t normal circumstances. We’ve just had the hottest June on record, breaking the previous record by nearly a whole degree! We don’t need Hawk-eye to see that our government issuing over 100 new fossil fuel licenses is a very bad line-call,” she added.

Their actions drew a mixed response as some supported them and others did not agree with their methods.

“There is literally nothing more important to the survival of humanity than reversing climate change, and nobody is listening! These people are heroes to risk legal penalties in an effort to get people to pay attention,” commented a user.

“I’d love to hear all the appropriate ways to protest. Because clearly everyone has a problem with ANY kind of protest,” another person wrote. “People mad at this and not oil. We’re doomed,” another netizen said. “This has got to be the dumbest way to get the message across,” another user wrote critically.
