iPhone 6s and 6s Plus launch: Is that all, Apple?

Is Apple also falling into the all too familiar rut that tech companies end up in once in a while?

The Apple iPhone 6 might be the most popular smartphone model in the world at the moment, and its successor the iPhone 6s could be most advanced as Tim Cook chose to call it, but it is still a little underwhelming for many of those who have been following the company for years. Yes, it might be harsh to expect a disruptor at every Apple event, but that is what the world expects the guys from Cupertino to deliver.

So when they wrap up an event where there are not as many ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ as when they showed the world the iPod, the iPhone or the iPad, we are naturally worried — are they also falling into the all too familiar rut that tech companies end up in once in a while?

Is Apple also struggling to innovate?

Let’s look at the new iPhone. The most innovative feature here is the 3D touch and Apple has apparently been working on it for years. But users will take time to adjust to this feature, especially if you are using multiple iOS devices as this new feature will work only on the new phones. Not such a big hurdle you may say, but we cannot guarantee that everyone will be using it right off the block.

The next innovation is the Live Photo, something a lot of Android phones and even Lumia devices have been offering in a way for a over a year.

There is not a lot of innovation like what we saw in the iPad Pro or the Apple TV, while the way Siri is integrated into the latter is pretty awesome. The iPad Pro features are stuff Samsung and Microsoft have had for a while now. This is just a much more productive iPad.

In fact many of the features on display were Apple perfecting or bettering something Android has had for a long time like the 4K video capture and the touch remote from Android TV. We don’t want Apple to be a follower, we want it to lead. That is how we have seen Cupertino.

The markets could sense this and the Apple Inc stock fell about 2 per cent after the big ticket event. And it is not the first time that Apple stocks have fallen on a day a new iPhone has been launched. In fact, it has happened for three consecutive years now.

The good news is that there is some genuine innovation, this time in the form of the iPhone upgrade programme which is now limited to US retail stores. The concept of locking in a subscriber who upgrades every time a new device is launched is something a lot of smartphone makers would want to replicate.

Meanwhile, the world waits for the next big disruptor from Cupertino.
