AI start-up OpenAI, maker of ChatGPT, has officially released the GPT-4 API to all users enrolled in the API program. The company has also released GPT 3.5, DALL-E, and Whisper as part of its update. OpenAI has also announced that it is planning to scrap older models in the Completions API from early 2024. OpenAI said that starting today, all paying customers will have access to GPT-4. The ChatGPT API was introduced in March, and this month, the company released its first update for chat-based models. “We envision a future where chat-based models can support any use case. Today, we’re announcing a deprecation plan for older models of the Completions API, and recommend that users adopt the Chat Completions API,” OpenAI wrote in its official blog. While asserting that GPT-4 is its most capable model, OpenAI said that millions of developers have requested access to it since March. The company also said that the range of products leveraging GPT-4 was expanding with each passing day. “Today, all existing API developers with a history of successful payments can access the GPT-4 API with 8K context,” he said. OpenAI said that it has plans to open access to new developers by the end of this month. Later it will also start raising the rate limits depending on compute availability. The company said that it was giving access to GPT-3.5 Turbo, DALL-E, and Whisper APIs based on their stability and readiness. OpenAI further said that the company was working on safely allowing users to fine-tune GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 Turbo. However, this feature will only be available later this year. The company also said that it will now shift to Chat Completions API, which offers a more structured prompt interface. This will enable developers to create conversational experiences. Chat Completions API was introduced in March, and it currently accounts for 97 per cent of OpenAI’s API GPT usage.
