Opinion Sorry state

Pakistan’s gradual descent into anarchy is the outcome of its compromising stand on terror.

This refers to the editorial ‘The slippery slope’ (IE,January 6). Pakistan’s gradual descent into anarchy is the outcome of its compromising stand on terror. A state which chooses extra-judicial ways to promote its hidden agenda always has the potential of becoming a “rogue” state, which Pakistan has almost become. Pakistan has a history of political assassinations and its conviction rate is abysmally low. It’s a matter of time before terror outfits take over the reins in Pakistan — if the state does not wake up to the situation. That will be a sad day for India, given our long border with Pakistan. Pakistan must abandon its obsession of severing Kashmir from India as revenge for Bangladesh if Pakistanis do not want the genie of terror to engulf them.

Biting the bullet

The editorial ‘The slippery slope’ has rightly struck alarm bells for India with regard to the crisis of Islamic radicalism that has hit our neighbour. Pakistan’s religious faith was supposed to be its defining identity and raison d’etre. But,unfortunately, its fanatics pose the gravest danger to its existence as a modern, moderately Islamic society. The report ‘Rose petals, kisses for Taseer’s killer’ (IE,January 6) provided evidence that Islamic extremism has penetrated the Pakistani psyche. Otherwise, how does one explain that “500 Pakistani scholars and clerics” hailed Governor Salman Taseer’s killer as a “ghazi”?

The skirmishes among the members of M. Karunanidhi’s family will soon explode into a major confrontation, and the DMK disintegrate (‘2G revolt in Tamil Nadu: Alagiri threatens to resign unless Kanimozhi,Raja dumped’,IE,January 5). The Congress should realise that an alliance with the tainted DMK during the upcoming assembly polls in Tamil Nadu will result in its decimation. It is hoped good sense will prevail upon the Congress to sever connections with the DMK before it is too late. The UPA need not worry about its stability without the DMK’s support as Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK will come to its rescue. Without Congress support, the DMK cannot hope to capture power.

Government jab

With reference to the editorial ‘College daze’ (IE,January 6),I’d like to say that the UGC’s control over private universities will augur well for our education system. As far as lecturers’ salaries are concerned,I feel they should be uniform for all universities. Lecturers should be brought under a common cadre. This will force them to work better due to the lurking fear of being transferred to other universities.
