•The BJP apparently has become a party where a few individuals call all the shots, based on their whims and hardline stance on all issues. The machinations of these few and their uncompromising vindictiveness are destroying the BJP. The question is: who is fooling whom? Are the top BJP leaders doing the fooling or being fooled? In any case, strife within the party bodes ill for India. The BJP cannot abdicate its responsibility to the country as the main opposition party.

Be fearless

• This refers to ‘Tackle ‘big fish’ firmly…’ (IE,August 26). The PM deserves credit for speaking the truth. Law enforcers often tend to go easy on the rich and powerful. The CBI needs to act without fear as it is only through pinning down and eradicating corruption that the country can optimise its socio-economic performance.

•In the midst of a severe drought and a global recession, the Union government has made the right choice as per its finance minister is concerned (‘Ambani’s must…’,IE,August 27). Pranab Mukherjee may be viewed as a Congress old timer and he may not have Manmohan Singh’s reformist credentials, but he has previous experience in the job and is a very able decision-maker. He had deftly managed the economy in the ’80s,and in the current context, has proved that he can think out of the box and is not bound by the old order.

Market & party

•It’s a sad truth that historians do not get good placements and satisfying jobs unless they conform to an “acceptable” worldview (‘Who writes history?’,IE,August 27). This unfortunate trend however can be seen in the humanities; one merely needs to look at history and other social sciences. Perhaps one can attribute this trend to political interference and corruption. But academic history shouldn’t be moulded by political ideology. However, delving into this issue further it can be seen that writers hesitate to criticise social mores too. So it can also be argued that historians model their treatises on not just ideology but also market demands.

Moving ahead

• Nothing honest and valuable can be produced by a society grounded in falsehood, deceit and hypocrisy (‘Who writes history?’,IE,August 27). Conflicts will naturally be present during the life of a nation. But for a nation to move forward, especially vis-à-vis public debate, all points of view must be reconciled fairly and squarely. Suppression can only lead to further perversion and socio-political rifts. Our official historical discourse has revolved round various Marxist versions of our history; it’s time to write make other interpretations of our history.
