Fooling around
* This pertains to Fast turnaround and Making haste slowly (IE,September 15). Notwithstanding the exceptional all-round development in Gujarat and the long tenure of its chief minister,Narendra Modi,it looks odd that he should undertake a fast in the name of peace and harmony. Is he creating a larger-than-life image for some undisclosed ambition? Undoubtedly, the image of the Congress and its UPA allies is at its lowest, but can the BJP make any political gains from Modis fast or Advanis rath yatra? These are old gimmicks. Today, people are more concerned about rising prices, healthcare, crime and corruption. The BJP and its NDA partners should come out with a creative vision for development. Only that can help them make political gains.

One for the road
* L.K. Advanis decision to undertake another rath yatra to condemn corruption in public life has the blessings of BJP President Nitin Gadkari. In BJP-ruled states like Karnataka and Uttarakhand, people might be disappointed by the leaderships glib talk on corruption. Will Advani succeed in harnessing the results of Anna Hazares anti-corruption campaign to the BJPs advantage? If he makes it happen,he could be the partys face in the 2014 elections.

Fuelling the fire
* This refers to Petrol prices up by Rs 3 per litre (IE,September 16). Household budgets are already reeling under inflation and these will be further strained. This is the second such hike in four months. Its argued that the hike was necessary because of under-recovery on petrol. But the average citizen will not be able to bear this burden.

Ode to Dravid
* When we needed a wicketkeeper-batsman,Rahul Dravid readily became one. When we needed to shield our dashing batsmen from the new ball,he became the wall. When they wanted to bat at the top,Dravid finished the job for us. When, one fine day,we said his legs were too old for shorter formats of cricket,he gracefully accepted. When everyone else failed in England,we called upon Dravid and he again took up the bat.

Citizens first
* While the US has successfully warded off a terrorist attack after 9/11,India continues to be victimised. After the Mumbai attacks,we thought our vigilance levels will permanently remain on a high alert. The Indian security establishment should adopt an approach like that of the Americans in securing the country and its people. The Indian government should send a signal that citizens come first.
