The homage to Indira Gandhi on her first death anniversary will begin at 4 am when the Congress members of Parliament assemble at the AICC-I office on Akbar Road for a silent march to her resting place, Shakti Sthal. The procession will leave Akbar Road on foot at 4.30 am so that the march will be at Shakti Sthal by 6 am to pay homage and offer prayers at the late prime minister’s samadhi along with her son, the Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi.

Water crunch

The Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, warned state governments of a “water crunch” in 10 or 15 years and sought their co-operation in the formulation of an integrated national policy on water use. Inaugurating the first meeting of the National Water Resources Council, he pointed out the lack of coordination among states and pleaded for efforts to cut wastage.

CEC on Assam

The Chief Election Commissioner, R K Trivedi, has convened a high-level meeting of top Assam government officials in New Delhi to discuss arrangements for holding elections in the state. The meeting would also review the progress of work relating to the preparation of the electoral rolls in the north-eastern state, which is a prerequisite for conducting the poll.

21 pilgrims killed

About 21 pilgrims were killed, including eight women and a child, when a Setwin mini bus in which they were travelling to the Narasimhaswamy temple at Yadagirigutta in Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh fell into a roadside ditch at Anshapur village, 30 km from Hyderabad. While 16 persons were crushed to death on the spot, two died on the way to the hospital and the rest in the hospital.
