Building Pune | Pune’s Bharat Mandapam to come up at Lohegaon

The first Bharat Mandapam was built at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, and it hosted the G20 summit in 2023.

pune bharat mandapamThe Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed to change the land use to construct a state-of-the-art convention centre in Lohegaon to push the city’s growth.

Established as an educational, information technology, and automobile hub, Pune city is all set to have an international exhibition and convention centre, a Bharat Mandapam, in Lohegaon—on the lines of the one built at Pragati Maidan in the national capital—to hold mega events, exhibitions, and conferences of global standards.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed to change the land use to construct a state-of-the-art convention centre in Lohegaon to push the city’s growth.

“The land in survey numbers 236 and 238 in Lohegaon has been reserved for gardens, sports ground, vegetable markets, water works, parking, and hospitals in the development plan of the city. The Government has been urged to review the land use, depending on the local situation, so as to take appropriate decisions for constructing the Bharat Mandapam,” said Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram.

“On the entire land parcel of 19.73 hectares in Lohegaon, the PMC has reserved the area for gardens, sports grounds, vegetable markets, water works, parking, hospitals, and roads. There is no land available for the development of infrastructure for other purposes. A garden exists 500 m away from the adjoining survey number in Lohegaon. The proposed land for the Bharat Mandapam is near the Lohegaon airport. It is at the centre of the city and at a strategic location. Thus, the land should be used for constructing the <strong>Bharat Mandapam as it will be useful for cultural activities, Sangeet Kala Kendra, and musical concerts,” said BJP legislator Sunil Kamble.

According to the PMC, the city should have around 16 per cent of its land reserved for recreational purposes, but in the Nagar Road area, only 5.16 per cent land is available for the purpose. Also, the Government has conveyed that there should not be a change in the land meant for a playground. And the civic project department said the land reserved for parking should be used for the same purpose, while the civic garden department said the land reserved for a garden should be used for developing one, as there was no civic garden in the nearby area of Lohegaon.

Proposals for constructing more Bharat Mandapams

However, the Government has decided to construct Bharat Mandapams in Mumbai, Thane, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nagpur, Pune, and Nashik on a minimum of 12 hectares of land. Thus, the Government directed the PMC to send a proposal to change the land use for survey numbers 236 and 238 for developing the Bharat Mandapam in Lohegaon, said the municipal commissioner.

“The PMC is of the opinion that the Bharat Mandapam can be developed in Lohegaon by cancelling the existing reservation meant for other civic purposes, but on the condition that land will not be used for any residential or commercial purpose in the future,” he added.
After getting the Government’s consent, the PMC has issued a notice on changing the land use in Lohegaon and sought public feedback on the proposal to use the land for constructing the Bharat Mandapam, he added.
