Why reshuffle?

8226; Nothing can be more dangerous than non-performance by any government. When this BJP-led NDA Government came to power in 1999, people held high hopes because of the BJP8217;s claims of being 8216;8216;a party with a difference8217;8217;. Sadly, the party has failed itself as well as its voters. This government promised a clean and transparent administration. But of late, there has been a spate of corruption cases involving politicians, bureaucrats and even the judiciary. Perhaps this calls for setting up a Ministry of Corruption Control, both at the Centre and State levels. The NDA Government was expected to perform as a 8216;8216;National Development Agency8217;8217;. But it is 8216;8216;Not Doing Anything8217;8217; because it has 8216;8216;No Definite Agenda8217;8217;. Cosmetic reshuffles such as these will make no difference to the quality of governance, unless some of the 8216;8216;potted plants8217;8217; are shown the door.

8226; I was surprised at the number of scandals mentioned in the article. There are many who doubt if the various exposures, like the one on Union Railways Minister Nitish Kumar, have any impact on society. Even Jayprakash Narain said that prosecution of a PM8217;s or President8217;s relative can only occur in the UK and US, not in India. The Indian Express should campaign for the setting-up of a trust to fight all sorts of injustices, with eminent persons like Anna Hazare and Baba Amte as trustees. The population of India has crossed the one billion mark. Even if one per cent of this population were to contribute Re 1 each, it would amount to a substantial sum. The interest accrued could be utilised to engage some sincere lawyers, whose job would be to file PILs against the various cases of violation of State laws.

Think positively

All your editorials highlight a negative aspect of the Government. So, even when you point out the truth, it doesn8217;t look like you8217;re acting in the national interest. Why don8217;t you change this negative approach and offer constructive criticism which, besides being useful to the government and the people, would also indicate a progressive editorial attitude.

8226; The article exposes our Cabinet reshuffles for what they are. They have become a part of our so-called governance. Everyone desperately tries to hold on to their kursis, or, if they don8217;t have one already, tries to grab it.

8226; You have presented a first class analysis of the NDA8217;s state of affairs. The last five years of its rule hasn8217;t brought much good news for the nation. The biggest cause of concern is the manner in which it violates the Constitution. Remember the 13-day old Vajpayee regime that backed the Enron guarantee for the power plant in Maharastra, bringing bankruptcy to the richest State of the Union. Then there are the scams and corruption of the last five years. Last, but not the least, is the genocide delivered by Narendra Modi, BJP and the Sangh Parivar in Gujarat, which broke the back of the Gujarat economy. It8217;s too late now for the NDA to try and revive its fortunes by a reshuffle of the Cabinet. The taxpayers8217; hard-earned money has been wasted. The people cannot trust a government that acts like an outlaw.

8226; Why single out Kanshiram Rana? What have our other Textile Ministers done so far? They have only succeeded in converting the 8216;8216;Manchesters of India8217;8217; 8212; Mumbai and Ahmedabad 8212; into graveyards of the textile mill industry. As if this was not enough, they even permitted the import of second-hand textile machinery. Whether the exports improved or not is anybody8217;s guess, but the Indian Textile Machinery industry received a severe blow . Small and medium units vanished in no time. Out of about 65 mills in Ahmedabad, only 10 are functional today. The overburdening of the industry with heavy taxes, water charges, electricity bills and rising cotton prices was too must to bear. But what did these ministers do? Nothing.

8226; In the column, it was mentioned that 8216;8216;one of them will have to be a genius or a PhD on Madhya Pradesh politics to be able to come up with the name of Arjun Charan Sethi8217;8217;. I8217;d like to point out that Sethi does not belong to Madhya Pradesh. He is a BJD politician from Orissa.
