Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan on Wednesday told the Assembly that the government would consider the demand for altering the spelling and the pronunciation of Kerala to Keralam,as stated in Malayalam.
Replying to a submission raised by CPM legislator Babu M Pallisery, the Chief Minister said that the demand had come from many corners, but a decision would be taken only after detailed discussions at various levels.
Recently, the government had constituted a committee, headed by the Revenue Minister,to study the matter.
The argument behind the demand to change the states name was that several other Indian states and cities have been renamed on the basis of their mother tongue. In Kerala, the cities of Canannor,Calicut and Trichur had been renamed Kannur,Kozhikode and Thrissur respectively,in accordance with their pronunciation in Malayalam.
I have been raising the issue for the last three years. However,it could be raised as a submission only during this session, Palissery pointed out later.
