A 43-year-old cab driver and one of his passengers were killed after a speeding car rammed into his taxi in South Delhi’s Siri Fort area on Wednesday.
The police said they have arrested the accused, a 21-year-old MBA student.
According to the Delhi Police, the accident happened at the traffic intersection of August Kranti Marg, when a Citroen car driven by Krishansh Kapoor, hit a white Hyundai Xcent cab coming from the opposite side, with driver Girja Kumar Bharadwaj at the wheel and Ranjeet, 30, and Sumit, 20 in the passenger seat.
“A call was received at 4:20 am about the accident, and three people were rescued from inside the vehicle. The injured were rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where Bharadwaj and Ranjeet were declared dead. Sumit is under treatment,” a senior officer said.
A resident of Khirchipur in East Delhi, Bharadwaj was driving Ranjeet and Sumit — both relatives and drummers at weddings — from Andrews Ganj to Ranjeet’s house in the Nehru Nagar area. Ranjeet and Sumit were in South Delhi to perform at a wedding.
Once Bharadwaj’s car reached the Siri Fort intersection, turning towards Balbir Saxena Marg, a speeding Citroen coming from the opposite side — down the Panchsheel Flyover — hit its left side, ramming the cab into a nearby signboard before it collided with a traffic signal pole and climbed onto the pavement.
Both cars were found at the Andrew’s Ganj intersection, with the Xcent’s left side completely mangled while the Citroen’s bumper also suffered damage.
“The accused Krishansh Kapoor was at the spot and was immediately arrested. He was coming from a friend’s party and was going towards his home in Udai Park area of Andrews Ganj, which is about 1 km away from the site of the accident,” a police officer said.
The police said they have registered a case against Kapoor under sections 281 and 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Hauz Khas police station, and that a medical report confirmed that he was not drunk at the time of the accident.
Bharadwaj is survived by his wife and two sons, with the younger one in a coma after he met with an accident two years ago.
