They are the path-breakers. Literally. They have been at it for days,in rain and shine, working out paths down hills and through valleys for pilgrims stranded in Gobindghat.

The ITBP men and 200 Punjab Police commandos are deployed along eight stretches of the Joshimath-Badrinath highway that have been washed away, helping the pilgrims trek up and down the rocky and slippery hills, and to safety.

They even carry children on their backs. God has punished us by leaving us in this situation, but he has sent these angels to help save our children, said Srupti Negi of Srinagar,Uttarakhand, who reached Gobindghat after a two-day trek from Badrinath. There was no way,I could have crossed these mountains with my child.

In the past two days, these men,who work from 6 in the morning till 7 in the evening, have even carried 15 motorbikes up and down the mountains to a motorable road.

We are trying our best to take these people to the road, from where army and government vehicles take them to Joshimath, said Hardeep Singh, one of the commandos.

His comrade Gurpreet Singh added,Our aim is to evacuate as many people and vehicles as possible. If motorbikes need to be carried,we dont mind it.
