Sorties expensive, unreliable, state govt urges Centre to help lay roads

Uttarakhand has urged the central government to build more than 650 roads on war footing as reaching the flood-ravaged areas through air

Uttarakhand has urged the central government to build more than 650 roads on war footing as reaching the flood-ravaged areas through air was expensive and unreliable in cases of extreme weather. Some 1,335 villages are still cut-off because of the lack of connectivity, road or air.

At a meeting convened by the home ministry, the state urged various agencies, including the road transport and highways ministry,to assess the damage caused to roads. The state said 1,876 roads were destroyed by the floods and landslides, and of them,671 roads are yet to be made motorable.

We told the home ministry that we will be back to the age of mules and horses if connectivity is not restored. At least the engineers should begin assessment as all pilgrims have been evacuated now. We cannot drag on this issue for long, a senior state official said.

The state government stressed that rehabilitation would not be possible in the absence of roads. Roads should be made passable at least. It should be worthy enough so that light motor vehicles can pass easily, the official said.

He pointed out that the state could no longer rely on helicopters as bad weather has been predicted in the coming days.
