India on Wednesday expressed concern over disconcerting reports that its mission was being spied upon by US intelligence agencies, and said that New Delhi will take up the matter with US authorities.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said,We have seen and studied the media reports of our embassy in Washington being amongst the list of diplomatic missions which were intrusively monitored by the American agencies.
We are concerned at such disconcerting reports and we will raise with US authorities the serious allegations, he said, responding to a question on Indias position on the recent revelation. The latest top secret US NSA documents leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden said the Indian Embassy in the US was among a list of 38 diplomatic missions which were being spied upon by US intelligence agencies.
On External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshids remarks defending the vast American surveillance programme,Akbaruddin said,Our views remain what we have previously said, that we are concerned. He maintained that the minister was only elaborating his discussions with the US Secretary of State John Kerry during his last meeting on the issue.
