The Supreme Court on Tuesday admitted a petition alleging that statements made by Home Minister P Chidambaram indicating the evolvement of a mechanism to resolve the Telangana issue were against national interest.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan posted the matter for urgent hearing on February 22.

The petition, filed by a practising advocate from Andhra Pradesh,B P Yadav, argued that the minister8217;s statements had created rifts among the indigenous communities, and compromised peace in the region.

The apex court had earlier dismissed a PIL filed by a former Member of Parliament,M Narayan Reddy, seeking directions to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker to accept the resignations submitted by 139 MLAs on the Telangana issue.

Chidambaram8217;s statement that a mechanism for forming the new state was being put in place by the government had been followed by several days of strikes and demonstrations throughout Andhra Pradesh.
