Facing criticism for the recent spate of attacks on Indian students,Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on Wednesday vowed to provide maximum security to foreigners studying in Australia.
Any assault against any person or any visitor to Australia or any international student is one assault too many, Rudd told a visiting Indian media delegation. All international students are our guests. We have a responsibility to provide them maximum safety. If you look at the international comparative criminal data on assault rates and homicide rates, this Australia is one of the safest countries in the world. Rudd, said, adding however that this did not mean we are perfect. Australia hosts over 5 lakh international students, including 97,000 Indians.
The Australian Prime Minister said he was disturbed by these assaults and that his government was doing everything that is possible to maximise the security.
I take these things attacks quite seriously. I have discussed it with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as well. We will work our way through this. I have many friends in the Indian community, Rudd said.
Claiming that about 20 Australians were murdered, assaulted and sexually harassed in India last year,Rudd said he did not blame Indian people or government for that. These are things which regrettably happened and we are disappointed they happened wherever they occurred, he said.
Two more Indian youths were assaulted in Australia on Monday. Sixteen persons have been assualted within the past month.
