Madhya Pradesh requested the 13th Finance Commission, which ended its two-day visit to the state on Tuesday, for a special package to improve its economy and to accelerate its slow growth rate.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who led the presentation before the constitutional body, attributed the states slow rate to historical reasons, and sought the package to break the cycle of low investment, low growth and low income.

The commission, constituted on November 15,2007,is expected to come out with its recommendations by October-end this year.

The states proposals for grant-in-aid include: Rs 9,071 crore for energy; Rs 6,239 crore for education; Rs 4,727 crore for health and nutrition support; Rs 5,600 crore for maintenance of roads; and Rs 3,539 crore for development of the Narmada basin.

Chouhan demanded that all the projects started in the Narmada Basin be declared national projects,a status that would raise the Centres share of expenses to 90 per cent. The state also sought a massive Rs 9,000 crore for separation of feeder to ensure 24-hour power supply to villages and eight-hour supply to the farm sector.
