A man the police claimed to have killed in an encounter outside the city on Friday has been identified as underworld figure Dhananjay Pujari, associate of Ravi Pujari,an Asia Pacific-based mafia figure with a history of extortion cases.

Ravi Pujari himself called local TV channels and identified the dead man,but also termed the encounter as fake, the channels reported on Friday. The Mangalore Police have also confirmed the identity of the dead man.

Local police sources said they had been exploring an angle that the Mangalore pub that was attacked by Sri Ram Sene activists was a part of a hotel alleged to be a front for Ravi Pujari and whether the attack on the pub was a result of long standing rivalry between Pujari and another underworld figure,Bannanje Raju.

Many doubts have been raised over the veracity of the encounter with no blood or visible signs of a gunfight being found at the desolate spot on a highway and police officials making contradictory statements in the morning.
