The inaugural YAI–Ocean Gold Konkan Offshore Sailing Regatta, a 222-nautical-mile offshore challenge along the Konkan coast, is set to begin this week, bringing together elite sailors and rare access to some of the region’s most scenic maritime stretches. The event, organised by the Ocean Gold Boat Club in collaboration with the Yachting Association of India (YAI), will run from December 8 to 12.

The endurance race will see eight keelboats and two seabird-class boats sailing from the Gateway of India to Goa, with a scheduled heritage halt at the historic Vijaydurg Fort. Among the participating sailors are some of India’s most accomplished names, including Commander Dilip Donde (Retd.), the country’s first solo circumnavigator, along with Lieutenant Commander Dilna Devadas and Lieutenant Commander Roopa Alagirisamy, who completed a historic circumnavigation in eight months.

Event preparations began on Monday with registration and a skippers’ briefing at the Royal Bombay Yacht Club. The seabird fleet will be flagged off from the Gateway of India on Monday, followed by the keelboat start on Tuesday. Organisers said the regatta aims to combine high-standard offshore racing with coastal exploration along one of India’s most challenging sailing routes.

“We want every sailor and supporter to feel the same sense of anticipation and connection that the sea inspires,” said Ramesh Bulchandani, founder of the Ocean Gold Boat Club. He added that the Konkan coastline has offered him some of his most memorable sailing experiences.

The Navy, the Indian Coast Guard, and the tourism departments of Maharashtra and Goa are supporting the event, ensuring navigational safety and access to coastal points. A dedicated media programme has also been planned to document the race.

The regatta will conclude in Goa, with the Goa Yachting Rendezvous featuring additional fleet racing around Grande Island. The prize distribution ceremony is scheduled for Saturday at Dona Paula. Organisers expect the offshore race to become a regular feature on India’s sailing calendar.
