Kachroo ragging case: HC upholds conviction

The Himachal Pradesh High Court has upheld the conviction of four medical students involved in the 2009 Aman Kachroo ragging case and enhanced the fine imposed on them from Rs 10,000 to Rs 1 lakh each.

The Himachal Pradesh High Court has upheld the conviction of four medical students involved in the 2009 Aman Kachroo ragging case and enhanced the fine imposed on them from Rs 10,000 to Rs 1 lakh each. The convicts Navin Kumar Verma,Ajay Verma,Mukul Sharma,Abhinav Verma belong to Dr Rajendra Prasad Medical College,Tanda Kangra.

Aman Kachroo 19,only son of his parents and a first-year medical student,was severely beaten up by his seniors on the night of March 6,2009 which subsequently led to his death on March 8,2009.

He was repeatedly ragged by the four as they were allegedly drunk.

On November 11,2010,Additional Districts and Sessions Judge of Kangra Purinder Vaidya had convicted and sentenced them to four years imprisonment beside a fine of Rs 10,000 each.

On Thursday,a HC Division Bench comprising Justices R B Misra and Surinder Singh dismissed their appeal against this sentence. After analysing the material on record,prosecution witnesses and medical opinion,the additional sessions judge has correctly arrived at the finding of their guilt and convicted them,which requires no interference, said the judgment.

5 children die in Jamp;K mishap

Five children were killed when a school bus that they were travelling in skidded off the road in south Kashmir and fell into a gorge around 200 ft deep Thursday.

The driver of the bus also died in the accident. Six critically injured children were rushed to Srinagar.

Four children and the driver were killed on spot. Another child died at hospital. The bus was carrying 14 students, said Anantnag Superintendent of Police Showkat Ahmad.
