The all-India unemployment rate was 4.7 per cent in 2012-13,according to an official survey,with urban unemployment higher than in rural areas. The third Annual Employment and Unemployment Survey for 2012-13,released by the Labour Bureau on Thursday,pegged urban unemployment rate at 5.7 per cent. In rural areas,unemployment rate is 4.4 per cent, it said.
The unemployment rate amongst workers between 15 and 29 years was pegged at 13.3 per cent. Meanwhile,the labour force participation rate for youth was 39.5 per cent. The Labour Bureau is expected to soon release another survey on Youth Employment-Unemployment Scenario that will capture trends in the labour market for workers between 15 years and 29 years of age.
The survey,which covered 1,33,354 households across the country of workers over 15 years in age,also revealed that self employment is the major source of income with 51.2 per cent households self employed under farm and non-farm activities. Regular or wage salary earning was the major source of income for just 12.9 per cent rural households but constituted as the main source of income for 42.1 per cent urban households.
At an all-India level,48.2 per cent were estimated to be self-employed,followed by 17.4 per cent under the wage or salary earning category and 34.4 per cent employed as contract workers and casual labourers.
Significantly,female unemployment rate at 7.2 per cent was higher than male unemployment rate that was pegged at 4.4 per cent.
Amongst states,Sikkim had the highest number of unemployed people while Chhattisgarh had the lowest unemployment rate in the country.
The unemployment rate per 1,000 persons aged more than 15 years was highest in Sikkim at 136,followed by Arunachal Pradesh at 130,Tripura at 126,Goa at 107 and Kerala at 104. In contrast,Chhattisgarh had the lowest unemployment rate of 14,followed by Karnataka at 20,Madhya Pradesh at 22,Andhra Pradesh at 25 and Gujarat at 27.
