Residents of Sectors 70, 71, Matour, Phase 7 and Phase 3B2 are finally likely to get relief from the long-pending problem of rainwater and tubewell waterlogging, with the approval of a major drainage project worth Rs 7 crore.

Under the project, a large-diameter underground pipeline will be laid from Matour Chowk to N-Chowk to ensure proper disposal of rainwater with tubewell discharge. The Local Government Department has formally approved the project estimate, which had been pending for a long time.

Notably, Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi had earlier announced a protest outside the Local Government Department office over the delay in clearing the project.

Explaining the issue, Bedi said that during the monsoon, natural water flow comes from the rear side of the area, but due to raised roads ahead, the drainage outlet remains blocked, causing severe waterlogging.

“Water pumped out through tubewells from low-lying areas could not flow further and instead entered residential houses, leading to heavy losses for residents,” he said.

The Deputy Mayor added that the issue had remained unresolved for several years, despite sustained pressure from residents.“I fought a long battle for this issue and even announced a dharna to ensure that the problem was addressed,” he said.

Bedi said that under the approved scheme, the new pipeline would carry both natural rainwater flow and tubewell discharge, providing a permanent solution to the drainage problem.

“This project will not only benefit Sectors 70 and 71 but will also bring relief to residents of Phase 7, Phase 3B2 and Matour. People across the area will finally be able to live without the fear of waterlogging during rains,” Bedi said.

The Deputy Mayor thanked officials of the Municipal Corporation and various departments for their cooperation. “After several objections and months of delay, officials accepted my request, leading to today’s success,” he said.

He also expressed special gratitude to Senior Deputy Mayor Amrik Singh Somal for extending full support to the project.
