Social media ban for adolescents and bringing over-the-top (OTT) streaming platforms under censorship purview were the two major recommendations received during the national seminar on consumer awareness held in Ahmedabad on January 4, the organiser, Akhil Bhartiya Grahak Panchayat (ABGP), Gujarat Prant, said Tuesday.
The event in Ahmedabad marked the inaugural session of a nationwide initiative by the ABGP to conduct around 125 such discussions across India this week.
ABGP, an affiliate of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), is an organisation dedicated to consumer rights and welfare in India, working to address various issues affecting citizens and advocating for policy changes.
“Citing the need to safeguard children from the harmful effects of social media, suggestions for implementing measures akin to Australia’s online safety Act were received,” Vijay Ahir, Ahmedabad Mahanagar vice-president of the ABGP told The Indian Express.
The ABGP also reiterated its long-standing demand to bring OTT streaming platforms under censorship purview, a concern its national secretary Jayantbhai Kathiriya emphasised during the discussions.
“Prominent citizens from the city from various walks of life were invited for the session. Following constructive views and active participation in the deliberations, these recommendations were received. After the culmination of all 125 sessions, a compiled suggestions will be put forth to the respective ministries in the state and Centre,” Ahir stated. This Ahmedabad session sets the stage for a series of discussions aimed at addressing critical consumer and societal issues across the nation, Ahir said.
