The film Girl Rising by Oscar-nominated director Richard E. Robbins,which highlights the stories of nine girls born in difficult circumstances,will be the pivot of a campaign for girls education by USAID,US ambassador to India Nancy Powell announced on Thursday. Girls featured in the film include Ruksana,an Indian pavement-dweller whose father sacrifices his own basic needs for his daughters dreams. The agency will oversee local language releases of the film.
WINTER HEAT
With polls drawing close,sparks are expected to fly at the upcoming winter session of Parliament. This year,the winter session is expected to start in the first week of December and conclude before Christmas. While several important financial Bills will be discussed,it is learnt that a focus area will also be to push through the boundary settlement agreement with Bangladesh that has been in the works for several years.
GOOD ATTENDANCE
South Block this week made sure that the Afghanistan embassy got a star-studded attendance at its national day reception. Not only was Commerce Minister Anand Sharma present as the chief guest,but Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh,Deputy NSA Nehchal Sandhu,former diplomats Jayant Prasad and Vivek Katju amongst many veteran and young Indian diplomats were also present. Considering the fact that India and Pakistan have different views on Afghanistan,Pakistan High Commissioner Salman Bashir was not behind in making his presence felt.
HOME CALL
A senior IAS officer from Andhra Pradesh cadre,currently posted in the Ministry of Home Affairs,is in the process of being repatriated to his parent cadre. Rajiv Sharma,additional secretary (Naxal management) and also handling internal security,is tipped to become the chief secretary of Andhra Pradesh. Sharma,who was earlier on deputation with Ministry of Environment and Forests,joined the MHA in January this year. It has come at a time when the state is headed for bifurcation.
NO REPLACEMENT
Yet another post of DG of a central police force has fallen vacant with the government not announcing a replacement. DG CISF Rajiv retired on October 31 but his replacement has not been named yet. To tide over the crisis,the ministry has handed over the additional charge of DG CISF to Subhash Joshi,DG,BSF. The post of DG,ITBP,had remained vacant for around two months and it was filled up only this week.
