The Navi Mumbai police Saturday arrested a 30-year-old woman from Kalamboli for allegedly smothering her six-year-old daughter to death and trying to pass it off as natural death. The woman who has been taking treatment for depression since 2024 told the police that she had wanted a male child and was also upset with her daughter for not speaking properly in Marathi.
An officer said that the woman, a BSc graduate, and a Kalamboli resident, claimed her daughter had passed away due to ill health on Tuesday. Accordingly, the Kalamboli police took an accidental death report in the matter. The post mortem report, however, pointed towards her being smothered to death.
The police then registered a murder case and found that her mother had been suffering from depression and was taking treatment since 2024. She was brought in for questioning by the police on Friday.
As per police, during sustained interrogation, she broke down and told the police that she had smothered her daughter. She said she had wanted a male child and also was upset that her daughter did not speak properly in Marathi.
An official said that the husband told the police that his wife had told him that she had tried to smother her daughter within months of giving birth to her.
Based on the interrogation, the police arrested the woman for the murder. She was produced before the court and remanded to police custody. An official said that the husband was an IT engineer and the couple got married in 2017.
