The Mohali police has arrested two persons, including former Youth Akali Dal leader Malkiat Singh Khalsa, on charges of hooliganism, scuffling with police personnel, and misbehaving with on-duty officers at the Phase-3B2 market. Their third accomplice managed to flee.

According to the police, the incident happened late Friday night when three youths, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, were roaming around the market parking area in a Thar SUV, playing loud music and driving recklessly. PCR personnel present at the market asked them to stop creating a nuisance and directed them to take the vehicle out of the market area.

Although the youths initially left the spot, they soon returned and again started making rounds in the parking area. Following this, in the presence of ASI Gurmeet Singh, the police issued a challan to the vehicle. Enraged by the action, the accused stepped out of the vehicle and allegedly pushed police personnel, abused them verbally, and even tore their uniforms while being intoxicated.

PCR official Gurneb Singh and constable Arshdeep Singh informed the police station, after which SHO Rupinder Singh, along with a police team, reached the spot and arrested Malkiat Singh Khalsa and Simarjeet Singh. The third accused escaped during the commotion. Khalsa is a former general secretary of the Youth Akali Dal.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Matour SHO Rupinder Singh said, “Both the accused were medically examined, which confirmed that they were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.”

He added that a case has been registered against Simarjeet Singh, resident of Sector 126, Mundi Kharar, and Malkiat Singh Khalsa, resident of Phase-3B2, under sections 132, 221, 296, 281, and 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and sections 184 and 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

The SHO said that efforts are underway to trace and arrest the absconding third accused and warned that anyone found involved in hooliganism, rowdy behaviour, or disturbing the atmosphere at markets will be dealt with strictly.
