Pak court serves notice on Zardari in a dual office case

Lahore: A Pakistani court on Monday served a notice on Asif Ali Zardari in a petition challenging his holding of a dual office,one of President and the other of the head of a political party. Pakistan Lawyers Forum president A K Dogar filed the petition in the Lahore Court,questioning the right of the President to hold the two offices. Zardari is sticking to the office of co-chairperson of PPP along with the office of President of Pakistan,which is a blatant violation of article 411 of the Constitution, Dogar said,who is also the counsel of Jammat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed.

Pak Interior Minister faces three-year imprisonment

Lahore: A Pakistani court on Monday dismissed an appeal by Interior Minister Rehman Malik against his conviction in two corruption references by an accountability court and restored a three-year imprisonment awarded to him. The accountability court had sentenced Rehman Malik to a three-year imprisonment in each of the two NAB references. A two-member bench of the Lahore High Court comprising Chief Justice Khawaja Mohammad Sharif and Justice Waqar Hasan Mir dismissed Maliks plea and restored the sentence after he failed to appear in the court.

Explosion at Turkish coal mine traps 32 workers

Ankara: An explosion ripped through a major coal mine in northern Turkey on Monday,trapping 32 workers,authorities said. The blast took place at the Karadon mine near the Black Sea port of Zonguldak. There was no immediate word on its cause. It was the third mine accident in Turkey in the past six months. Gov Erdal Ata of Zonguldak province said 32 workers were 540 metres below ground and there had been no contact with them since the blast. We are trying to reach them, Labour Minister Omer Dincer said.

Indonesia faces threat from terror ex-convicts: President

Jakarta: Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said on Monday that his country needed to remain vigilant for terror threats posed by militants released from jail. Although prominent figures who caused trouble in this country for the last 10 years had been paralysed8230; they continue to carry out terror acts after their release from jail, Yudhoyono told reporters. National police chief Bambang Hendarso Danuri on Friday said 58 terror suspects had been arrested and 13 people killed in anti-terror operations nationwide since the discovery of militant training camp in Aceh in February. But he said others were still at large,including Abdullah Sunata and a senior regional terror leader,Umar Patek.

European airports reopen,some see ash delays

LONDON: Three of Europe8217;s busiest airports reopened on Monday afternoon after a dense volcanic ash cloud from Iceland dissipated and a no-fly zone was lifted. Up to 1,000 flights in Europe were affected by the closures. Flights were landing and taking off from Londons Heathrow and Gatwick airports and Amsterdams Schiphol,but all three warned travelers it would take time for airlines to clear the backlog of delayed flights and to contact their airlines before going to the airport.

DETROIT: State police will take over the investigation of the fatal shooting of a seven-year-old girl by a Detroit police officer during a weekend raid at the girls home,a prosecutor said on Monday. Aiyana Jones was asleep on the living room sofa in her familys apartment when Detroit police,searching for a homicide suspect,burst in and an officers gun went off,fatally striking the girl in the neck,family members said.

London: The producers of Winnie are planning to go ahead with the movie despite getting a legal threat from Winnie Mandela,who wants the script approved from her. Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard star in the movie,which depicts the controversial life of the ex-wife of Nelson Mandela. The producers were threatened with a lawsuit by Winnies lawyers if they didnt consult her over the storyline,Contactmusic reported.

Pizza in Naples may be baked using coffin wood: Report

Rome: Italian prosecutors believe pizza in Naples may be baked in ovens lit with wood from coffins dug up from the local cemetery,Italian daily Il Giornale reported on Monday. Pizza,one of the few symbols of Naples8230; is hit by the concrete suspicion that it could be baked with wood from coffins, Il Giornale said. Investigators are setting their sights on the small pizza shops in the city on suspicion that patrons may use wood from caskets to keep ovens burning. Agencies
