Bihar: Docs call off strike,RJD MLA surrenders

GAYA/PATNA: The indefinite strike by junior doctors in Bihar demanding arrest of an RJD MLA,whose bodyguards had fired at them in a Gaya hospital,was on Friday called off after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar assured them of adequate security. Meanwhile,senior RJD MLA Surendra Yadav,whose security guards had fired at the doctors,surrendered before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate,Gaya,R N S Pande,which remanded him in 14 days judicial custody.

6.4 earthquake rocks Northeast

GUWAHATI: A moderate intensity earthquake rocked the Northeastern region on Friday evening. While a preliminary report of the Met department described its intensity as moderate,measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale,the North-East Institute of Science amp; Technology at Jorhat put the intensity at 6.3. While the first tremor of two quick jerks was felt for about two seconds,it was followed by a tremor lasting about 10 seconds,with people running out of their houses. There were no immediate reports of any damage to life or property.

BSNL engg held for taking bribe

NEW DELHI: A sub-divisional engineer of BSNL in Tamil Nadu was arrested by CBI on the charge of accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a contractor for an official favour. The accused identified as Pandian,sub-divisional engineer of BSNL in Harur Dharmapuri district,had allegedly demanded the bribe from the cable contractor for a condonation letter to the General Managers office for clearing his bills,said CBI.

TDP MPs house searched by I-T dept

HYDERABAD: Income-Tax Department officials conducted searches in the office and residence of Telugu Desam Party MP from Khammam Nama Nageswara Rao on Friday. In the May 2009 elections,Rao was one of the richest candidates with assets worth Rs 173 crores. Rao,who was in New Delhi,said that he was not aware of the searches.

SC seeks response on Kumbakonam relief

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday sought a response from the Centre and Tamil Nadu government on the compensation plea of the victims association of Kumbakonam fire tragedy in which 94 schoolchildren died in 2004. A Bench issued a notice to the respondents on the associations complaint that though more than six and half years have passed,kin of the deceased and injured were yet to receive compensation.
