Austrian commits suicide in TN

VELLORE: Austrian Gunther Bohr,50,jumped to death from the terrace of a hotel in Ranipet in Tamil Nadu,where he was on a business trip,police said Friday. He had checked into the hotel along with two local friends on January 5. Bohr called his wife,Monica,on Thursday to say he was killing himself,Ranipet DSP Gajendran said. Monica alerted his friends but by the time they reached his room,it was all over.

Indian cabbie jailed in Australia

MELBOURNE: An Australian court on Friday sentenced Baljit Singh,46, an Indian taxi driver to 15 months in jail for molesting a 13-year-old schoolgirl on June 12,2008. Crown prosecutor Dzenita Balic told the court that the girl had asked Singh to drive her to her grandmothers house but he took her to a park,where he fondled her and performed an indecent act in front of her.

SC transfers Raj cases to Delhi

New Delhi: A Delhi court will hear seven cases against MNS chief Raj Thackeray for allegedly making hate speeches after the Supreme Court on Friday transferred them from Jharkhand and Bihar. A Bench led by CJI K G Balakrishnan ordered the transfer of the cases to Tis Hazari courts on a petition filed by the MNS leader. Advocate Mukul Rohatgi submitted in hte court that there was an apprehension that the MNS chief will not get a fair trial in the two states.

Four alleged LeT members acquitted

NEW DELHI: A city court on Friday acquitted four alleged LeT members Haroon Rashid,Mohd Iftikhar,Masood Ahmed and Maulana Dilawar Khan who were accused of hatching a conspiracy to attack the IMA at Dehradun in 2005. The court,however,held two other alleged LeT members Hameed Hussain and Mohd Shariq who were arrested with 10.5 kg RDX guilty of possessing explosives.

Rukhsana to get Jeevan Raksha Medal

NEW DELHI: President Pratibha Patil has approved the award of Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak for Rukhsana Kosser,the Jammu girl who braved the bullets of LeT militants and killed one of them to save her family. The name of Rukhsana was recommended by state Governor N N Vohra for the award.
