Vaiko immerses ashes of Prabhakarans mother

Chennai: MDMK chief Vaiko on Tuesday immersed the ashes of Parvathi Ammal,the slain LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakarans mother,in the Bay of Bengal. Vaiko,a known sympathiser of the LTTE,accompanied by Tamil Eelam Liberation Supporters Co-ordination Committee convener P Nedumaran and some of his party men immersed the ashes in the sea off Marina Beach,sources said. Eighty-one-year-old Parvathi Ammal died of multiple ailments at a hospital in Sri Lanka on February 20.

Defer season tickets to girls: EC

New Delhi: The Election Commission has asked the Railway Ministry to put on hold implementation of the free monthly season tickets to girls upto college level in the five poll-bound states,including West Bengal,where Mamata Banerjee is seeking to vote out ruling Left Front. The EC had written to the Railway Board in this regard on Monday. The Board had earlier sought certain clarifications from the EC on its direction that the implementation of the announcements made by Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee on March 8 be deferred till the election process was over.

Woman beaten,paraded by husband

Surat: Neeta Rathod (30) was severely beaten by her husband and his uncle,her head tonsured,and paraded in the village streets in Palsana taluka of Surat district on Monday. A complaint in this connection was registered with Palsana police station by the victim. She tried to commit suicide after the incident,but a neighbour saved her and gave her shelter. Her husband Deepak Rathod,his brother Hitesh and uncle Raju alleged that she was having affair with one Raman,a resident of the same village.

Hungry tribals leave Kandhamal hostel

Phulbani: About 100 tribal girls of a state-run school left their hostel after having to spend two days without food at Durgapanga in Orissas Kandhamal district,officials said on Tuesday. Students of the Girls Residential High School,run by the Scheduled Tribal and Schedule Caste Development Department,left the hostel on Monday as they were not given any food for the past two days. We are trying to get back all the girls including 30 Matric examinees,who had left the hostel, Md Phiroj Khan,Additional District Welfare Officer said.

Mirchpur witness identifies accused

New Delhi: A witness in the Mirchpur case,where a Dalit man and his daughter were burnt alive in caste violence last year,identified the prime accused in a Rohini court on Tuesday. Deposing before Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau,Rajbir identified Rajendra Kumar,who,according to the prosecution,had insigated the mob to attack the homes of Dalits in Mirchpur,Hisar,in April,2010. According to Rajbir,who also sustained injuries in the incident,Kumar was leading the mob and was instrumental in setting the home of Tara Chand afire,in which he and his daughter Suman were burnt alive.
