BSP leader held for manhandling cops

GORAKHPUR: A local BSP leader has been arrested on charges of manhandling a policeman and forcibly taking away his brother from police custody,officials said. The BSP district in-charge Vinod Upadhyay allegedly stormed Kauwabagh police post on Tuesday and manhandled constable Yadvendra,after hearing about the arrest of his brother. His brother was held on charges of beating a man.

Activists seek CBI probe in Siras case

HISAR: A Jat Mahapanchayat has demanded a CBI probe into the caste violence in Haryana8217;s Mirchpur village in

which a disabled Dalit girl and her septuagenarian father were burnt alive and several houses of the community torched. The demand was made through a resolution adopted by the Mahapanchayat at its meeting in Hansi town on Tuesday which was attended by about 400 members.

SPO suspended for molesting minor

SRINAGAR: Jamp;K Police on Wednesday terminated a Special Police Officer SPO who allegedly molested a minor girl in north Kashmir8217;s Kupwara district. The SPO was terminated after local villagers took to streets demanding action against the policeman. A compliant was lodged in police station Kralgund by Ali Mohammad Gujri alleging that his six-year-old daughter was molested by SPO Sarabjit Singh of Rawalpora.

MUZAFFARNAGAR UP: Islamic seminary Dar-ul-Uloom Deoband has said conversion to Islam just for the sake of marriage is against religion. Its comments came after a Hindu man in Garhi Pukhta village said he wanted to convert to Islam to marry his domestic help,who is a Muslim. Last month,82-year-old Om Prakash and Gasia Begum 50 had applied at the marriage registrar office.

Constable kills colleague accidentally

MUMBAI: Constable Shyamrao Padvi was killed by a bullet accidentally fired by fellow constable Shekhar Dighe at the Mumbai West Control Room in suburban Bandra on Wednesday,police said. The bullet hit Padvi between his neck and shoulder,injuring him seriously,Senior Inspector Prakash George said. Padvi was immediately rushed to Bhabha Hospital where he was declared dead,he added. Dighe has been arrested.

V-C held for offensive e-mail

ITANAGAR: Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi Central University K C Belliappa was briefly arrested for sending an offensive e-mail in reply to woman faculty members mail,in Itanagar Tuesday,ASP J K Mehta said Wednesday. Beliappa who was later released on bail.

Halappa seeks anticipatory bail

SHIMOGA KARNA: Former Karnataka minister H Halappa,facing rape charges,Wednesday filed a plea in a court seeking anticipatory bail. Halappas counsel Ashok Bhatt argued that his client be granted bail as CID,which is probing the charges,had filed an FIR but not produced any CD purportedly having photos of the alleged victim.

ROURKELA: Kastu Lohar,65,of Aludega village in Orissas Rourkela district was killed,allegedly by one Bhikhan Lakra,60,as he suspected him of practising black magic. Lakra has been arrested. He told police that his Rajiv,20,was ill and was not recovering because of Lohar,police said.

Advanis cop son freed on bail

MUMBAI: A Mumbai court Wednesday freed on bail Ishwar Advani,54,who was arrested on May 1 for impersonating as a police officer and son of BJP leader L K Advani. Police had filed an FIR against him on April 23 after he abandoned his BMW at a petrol pump outside Mumbai Airport,triggering panic. Ishwar had told the pump manager that he was a police officer and the son of L K Advani.

Bihar: LLB students lathicharged

DARBHANGA: Atleast 12 students of C M Law College were injured when police resorted to a mild lathi-charge on Wednesday to quell about 200 examinees of the college appearing for LLB-Part I examination at M L S M College centre in Bihars Darbhanga district. The exam has been postponed.

N D Tiwari refuses DNA test

NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader N D Tiwari has refused to undergo a DNA test to prove that Rohit Shekhar is or is not his biological son. In an affidavit filed in Delhi HC,Tiwari said he never had a relationship with Shekhars mother Ujjwala Sharma,a Congress leader.
