The first phase of polling in 17 of the 28 Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka passed off peacefully on Thursday, but was marked by boycott calls at several polling stations and an overall fall in polling percentage as compared to the last Lok Sabha polls.

The overall polling percentage in Karnataka at 5 pm on Thursday stood at 51 per cent, down from the 61.5 per cent recorded in the 2004 polls. The turnout in the four Bangalore seats was low at 50 per cent. The turnout was, however,an improvement on the 42 per cent turnout during the Assembly polls in May 2008,and is being attributed to voter awareness campaigns being run in the Capital.

Chief Election Officer for Karnataka M N Vidyashankar said the final polling percentages for the state could climb as much as seven to 10 per cent. At many polling stations people were still waiting to vote at 5 pm. The final figure will be affected by the fresh numbers that will come in, he said.

While in most constituencies minority voters turned out in good numbers, nearly 4,900 voters from Alipur, listed at six polling stations in the area, boycotted the polls in protest against the murder of three men in Gujarat. Boycott of polls were also reported from Ramagondanahalli in the Bangalore rural segment, with nearly 1,500 voters staying away in protest against initiation of land acquisition process by the Bangalore Development Authority.
