Hardly a week after the Praja Rajyam was allotted a common symbol by the Supreme Court, the party has run into another legal hurdle. The Rashtriya Krantikari Samajwadi Party,a political outfit from Uttar Pradesh,on Thursday approached the apex court claiming it should be allotted the railway engine symbol.
The RKSP,which said it was an unrecognised national party, informed the Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan that it had fought the last elections on the same symbol. On this premise,it should have been allotted the symbol, which was recently allotted to the Praja Rajyam party. Subsequently, the Bench, also comprising Justice P Sathasivam, issued a notice to the Election Commission and Praja Rajyam Party.
In its petition, the RKSP claimed it was present in major states like Uttar Pradesh,Delhi,Jharkhand,Jamp;K,Tamil Nadu,Maharashtra,Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The court was informed that most of its candidates had been fighting elections on the railway engine symbol.
