In a major push to promote sports culture and steer youth away from drugs, the Punjab government is undertaking large-scale development of sports infrastructure across the state, Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh said on Wednesday.

During an inspection of the under-construction sports stadium at Saidpura village, Singh said, “For the first time in Punjab’s history, a government has planned to build stadiums in every village, keeping the future and health of children at the centre of its policies.”

He said around 3,300 sports stadiums are being constructed across Punjab, with 32 coming up in the Mohali Assembly constituency alone. “Mohali district is leading the state in terms of the pace of stadium construction,” the MLA added.

Providing details of the Saidpura project, Singh said the village panchayat has extended full cooperation by providing nearly two acres of land for the stadium and an additional one acre for parking. The stadium, being built at a cost of approximately Rs 35 lakh, will include a common room and separate washrooms for men, women and persons with disabilities. “The stadium will be completed within the next six months and will serve not only Saidpura but also youth from nearby villages,” he said.

Later, the MLA inaugurated the widening and upgradation work of the Sawara–Saidpura–Gidderpur–Chandiala road. Addressing the gathering, Singh said the Bhagwant Mann-led government is committed to strengthening basic infrastructure. The 5.09-km-long road is being widened from 10 feet to 18 feet at a total cost of Rs 2.92 crore, including Rs 2.75 crore for construction and Rs 17 lakh for five years of maintenance. The project is expected to be completed within six months, providing relief to commuters and reducing accident risks.
