INLD leader and MLA Ajay Chautala was Monday granted four-week bail by the Delhi High Court as he is expected to implant a pacemaker or undergo surgery.
The MLA was convicted in January, along with 53 others, including his father former Haryana chief minister OP Chautala, and is serving a 10-year sentence in the 1999 primary school teacher recruitment scam case.
The bench of Justice Sidharth Mridul granted Ajay Chautalas plea after taking note of reports filed by the Tihar Jail medical staff and AIIMS. Chautala was directed to get himself admitted to Medanta Medicity hospital within 24 hours of release, and not leave NCR without prior court permission. He has been directed to furnish a personal bail bond of 5 lakh rupees and two sureties.
OP Chautala also underwent a pacemaker implant surgery in May. Chautala senior was granted bail extension after senior advocate UU Lalit informed the court that the 78-year-old was suffering from several diseases apart from a heart problem for which he recently underwent surgery.
The court issued directions to the AIIMS director to submit a fresh report to specifically answer whether Chautala required further hospitalisation. The medical board has been asked to submit its report within a week. Chautalas bail has been extended till August 23.
The court also asked the Tihar Jail authorities and the CBI to reply to a plea by the wife of JBT scam whistleblower Sanjiv Kumar for bail. Kumar, sentenced to 10 years by the CBI court, was allegedly beaten up by fellow inmates at Tihar jail last week. The court has asked CBI to verify the allegations and submit a report by August 21.
