A district court of Chandigarh on Wednesday awarded a seven-year imprisonment to a 50-year-old man for raping a woman in 2018.

The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge, Dr Yashika, held the accused, Ashok Kumar, guilty under charges of rape.

According to the police, the case was registered on the complaint of a woman in November 2018. She mentioned that she had uploaded her resume on the internet for job purposes and then received an interview call for a job. As she reached the interview venue at around 7.30 pm on February 23, 2018, convict Ashok was present. Later, another girl reached there.

According to the complainant, Ashok ordered a cold drink, which was laced with some sedatives. After drinking the cold drink, she got unconscious. In the morning, when she woke up, she found herself undressed and that the convict had sexually assaulted her. Following the complaint, an FIR was registered against the accused under Section 376 (2) of IPC at the police station in Industrial Area, Chandigarh.

During the trial, the defence counsel argued that the accused has been falsely implicated in the case. The defence counsel argued that after the registration of the FIR when the petitioner asked from the prosecutrix for the registration of false FIR, upon which the woman realised her mistake and told that due to influence of some other person she has got lodged FIR, even no such promise was made by the petitioner for providing job. To take revenge, she managed to lodge an FIR against the petitioner, the defence counsel claimed.

The court, after hearing the arguments and relying on the evidence, held the accused guilty and sentenced him to an imprisonment of seven years.
