Students of Aligarh Muslim University AMU turned out in large numbers on Wednesday to vote for a students union,which will be installed after a gap of three-and-a-half years. The elections to the AMUSU,last elected in August 2006,which was suspended after a group of students attacked the V-Cs lodge in September 2007,passed off peacefully.
According to university officials,80 per cent of the 18,500-odd students turned out to vote. Counting started at 6.30 in the evening and results are expected by midnight.
While seven candidates each are in the running for the top three posts president,vice-president and honorary secretary 26 candidates are vying for the 10 cabinet seats.
