The function in Sharjah, UAE, was organised by AMU Alumni Forum UAE and saw an attendance of around 900 former students. Khurshid was the chief Guest and Lt Gen (retired) Zameer Uddin Shah, former Vice Chancellor of AMU, was the guest of honour present among other dignitaries at the function.
In his letter, Gautam had referred to recent controversies such as the hanging of Jinnah’s portrait in the university, the offering of funeral prayers by some Kashmiri students after the death of former PhD scholar-turned-alleged militant Mannan Wani.
“Despite ample evidence against them, the suspensions were revoked following pressure from Kashmiri students who had threatened to leave the campus,” said ABVP’s state secretary (Brij Prant) Yogendra Verma.
A resident of Kupwara in J&K, Wani was expelled from AMU in January this year after he appeared in a photograph on social media with a message claiming he had joined militant organisation Hizbul Mujahideen.

Amethi, Jan 17 (ANI): Union Human Resource and Development Minister Smriti Irani on Sunday backed the Centre's stand on the minority status of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), saying the government’s stand is not contrary to the act of Parliament. The issue of restoration of minority character of AMU is at present pending with the Supreme Court but what has triggered off the protests is the Centre's recent decision to reverse the UPA regime's stand of supporting the university in the apex court on this issue.
