1 in four new MLAs is a crime accused

Most legislators with criminal charges are of BJP.

One of every four legislators elected in the recent elections in Madhya Pradesh,Rajasthan,Delhi and Chhattisgarh has been charged with a crime.

An analysis of the state-wise figures compiled by the Association for Democratic Reforms shows 149 of the 589 25.29 per cent new MLAs have been slapped with criminal charges. The number has increased since the last elections in 2008,when it was 129.

Of the 149 MLAs,92 have been charged with serious crimes such as murder,attempt to murder,extortion,dacoity,assault on women and public servants. In 2008,the number of such MLAs was 49.

Chhattisgarh MLAs Amit Jogi Congress and Mahesh Kumar Gagda BJP and Rajasthan MLA Gulabchand Kataria BJP are,in fact,accused of murder. Delhi Congress MLA Asif Mohd Khan has been charged with attempt to murder.

Bulk of the MLAs,99,with criminal charges belong to the BJP. Of these,61 have been charged with serious crimes. Of the 38 Congress MLAs with criminal charges,21 have been accused of grave crimes.

Delhi has the most,25 of 70,MLAs with a criminal record,followed by Madhya Pradesh 73 of 230,Rajasthan 36 of 199 and Chhattisgarh 15 of 90.

Political watchers blamed the figures on the slow pace of judicial reform.
