NEW DELHI, January 30: On a warm spring day that turned suddenly bleak, things brightened up for Ved School, Hissar after they cashed in on a spot kick and went on to a 2-0 upset win against defending champions Moti Lal Sports School, Rai to enter the final of the Limca Soccer tournament at the Modern School ground here on Friday.
In the other semi-final, DAV Chandigarh, rode on the stocky Ravinder Kundu’s inspired showing to snuff out Saini School, Rewari 3-1. After a goalless first half in the first match, the Hissar team got the break they were looking for when Rai defender Anil Yadav was fouled.
Yashpal made no mistake with the spot kick and that scoreline stayed until the last minute when Manmeet, after a matchful of misses, finally shot an impressive one from top of the box that beat Somvir Ahlawat, the Rai goalkeeper.
Later, a depleted DAV team, with Thursday’s star Navtej Singh and two others staying out due to overage murmurs, it took a while for the forward line to get into sync.
But thatwas sorted out soon enough, and Harish Chander alongwith Ravinder Kundu struck a good tandem. Kundu moved in on his very first chance early on to set up a 1-0 lead. Saini School hit back with a superb header by Ravinder Kumar to equalise. Dinesh Sharma provided relief for DAV before half-time with a neat grounder to make it 2-1. And even as the DAV tempo rose and the Saini boys let up, Harish, in a final burst, ran round the ball and nudged it to Kundu who smashed in the last blow.
